PPD – post-partum depression is a mood disorder associated with childbirth. It can begin soon after giving birth, as a dramatic drop in hormones in the body may contribute. It is imperative that medical treatment be initiated promptly. Women who experience PMS or have a family history of other members having PMS or post-partum depression have a greater risk of experiencing mood disorders post-partum (post delivery). Symptoms may include extreme sadness, low energy, anxiety, crying episodes, irritability, and withdrawal from engaging with baby. This is a physiological imbalance that impacts emotional and mental well-being. Women generally respond well to skilled professional intervention. These new mothers, often overwhelmed, need the loving support of trusted persons to advocate for them if they are too exhausted or impaired to self advocate.
